Last night, following The Metropolitan Police’s inquiries into the phone hacking allegations, Guardian editor, Alan Rusbridger said they will resist ‘extraordinary demand’ to the utmost. This is regarding the plans to ask for source-related information from the newspaper.
Part of the phone-hacking investigation is known to involve asking Guardian to provide the source which allowed hacking into murdered teenager, Milly Dowler’s mobile phone. The investigation is currently understood to also be examining claims of a corrupt relationship between police officers and reporters.
Met Police are believed to have applied for an order under the Official Secrets Act which will force Guardian to handover documents relating to the source which will be used as evidence.
Guardian journalist, Amelia Hill was arrested earlier this month over the alleged passing of confidential information from a police officer to the newspaper.
However in a statement released by the Met Police said “We pay tribute to the Guardian’s unwavering determination to expose the hacking scandal and their challenge around the initial police response.”
Alan Rusbridger, last night agreed The Guardian’s coverage of the scandal may have caused embarrassment amongst the authorities. He said, “It looks vindictive and it looks ill-judged and disproportionate.”
