Chief executive of Universities UK, Nicola Dandridge has encouraged looking for the bigger picture instead of merely an applicants’ academic achievements.

The A* for GCE Advanced Level was introduced in 2010 in order for universities to differentiate between students gaining A’s and those who have higher potential.

“The A* is very persuasive and universities will be taking them seriously. But most universities will not take them completely at face value and will want to look at that,” she said.

“They cannot be seen as a ticket to university.”

As excited and nervous teenagers anxiously awaited their A-Level results, on Thursday 18th August, the statistics have now shown a rise in A*’s. An 8.2 per cent rise from 2010 demonstrates the gap between an A and an A*.
